Finding a way through the village

A river from the hills to the harbour, warm lights along the lanes, and a first journey between houses.

A river now cuts through Brightsite’s village, dropping from the wooded hillside into the lake beside the jetty. Its banks and crossings give the lanes new landmarks, while a traveller takes the first steps towards finding their own way between houses.

Today’s work connects parts of the place: the water above and below a fall, the light inside and outside a cottage, and the route from one doorway to another.

Following the river downhill

The river begins at a spring pool below the eastern summit. It winds between the hillside cottages, passes beneath timber crossings where the lanes meet it, and opens into the cove beside the harbour.

Longer stretches of water gather above a handful of falls. Ripples and foam travel downstream, picking up towards the lips and easing as the river reaches the lake. Work on the joins helps the upper water roll into each falling sheet, with the pool below remaining visible.

Warm lights along the lanes

The night scene gained more than a brighter moon. Light now reaches around corners and through openings, so a cottage’s hearth can warm its room and spill colour through the doorway.

Lantern posts mark the village lanes. Their light gives the paths a rhythm against the cooler moonlit ground, with nearby shadows kept steadier as the camera moves. Firelight also reaches farther across the scene, helping the houses remain part of the village when viewed from the lake.

A traveller finds a way

The first navigation trial gives a traveller a small errand: leave one cottage, follow the ground between them, and go inside the next house.

They use the same physical movement as the player, stepping over low blocks and steering through doorways. The route work also considers jumps, drops, wading and swimming, including finding a bank to climb out onto.

A route can respond when the world changes. Build a wall across the way and the traveller looks for another path; add a needed step towards a previously unreachable destination and the journey can begin again.

Still taking shape

The river is a designed part of this test landscape, and the traveller’s journey is a navigation trial rather than a villager’s daily routine. Jobs, households and the life of a working town are still ahead.

For now, there is a more connected place to explore: water to follow, lights to find the lanes by, and a character beginning to make the journey through it.

Archive note: these screenshots were captured on October 21 from the unchanged final October 9 Git checkpoint, using its own assets. The village is that build’s authored test layout; the traveller scene is its built-in navigation trial.
