Footsteps in the valley

A deer walks the green, while woodcutters and haulers begin turning the forest into a town's supplies.

The first deer walking the valley's green in the October 18 late-evening prototype.

The valley had more than the traveller moving through it today. A deer began walking the green, and the town’s people gained work that takes them out to the trees and back with wood.

Both are early experiments in giving a place life. The deer has a body and a measured pace; the workers have somewhere to go, something to carry, and a reason to return.

Hooves on the green

The deer has a chestnut coat, a pale chest and belly, dark hooves and a branching set of antlers. Its shapes keep the same broad, flat-shaded character as the rest of Brightsite.

The first walking pass puts it on a short route across the green. Each stride is matched to the distance it travels, with the hooves staying on the ground during the planted part of the step. The body shifts and the head nods as the weight moves from leg to leg.

There is a gallop study in the animation work too, but the game in this checkpoint still uses the walk. Herds, senses and fleeing are work for later. This is one animal on a controlled route, giving us a way to look closely at its scale and movement in the world.

Arrow contacts and a first fall were also tested against the deer’s own body. That is an early hunting interaction; carrying a carcass, butchering it and food are not part of this version.

Work at the edge of the woods

The logging camp now gives villagers a job to do. Woodcutters go to a nearby standing tree, strike through its trunk, then gather the logs where it falls. The same cutting and felling rules used by the traveller do the work.

The logging and hauling test in motion, with the historical build’s navigation overlay still visible.

Haulers take loose goods and the camp’s stock to a chest with space for them. The load is visible on the carrier’s back, so the journey has a physical presence between the trees and the stores.

This pass still starts the valley with a camp and workers already arranged for testing. It is a small working loop, with the details of founding and staffing a town still open. Routes around stumps and fallen wood need more work, and workers can still get stuck as the ground changes.

A prototype beginning

The day also began a simpler way into the game: start empty-handed, gather the first materials, and make a workbench. The bow and camp remain available in review scenes while their place in that progression is worked out.

These experiments are still being assembled and reconsidered. The progress today is in seeing movement connect to purpose: hooves carrying an animal across the grass, an axe reaching a tree, and someone bringing a load home.

Archive note: these screenshots were captured on October 21 from the unchanged October 18 late-evening checkpoint and its own assets. The valley was selected explicitly. The deer uses the original review route and held starting position; the camp view enables that prototype’s prearranged workers. These are development tests, not a finished wildlife or town simulation.

Brightsite is a Seleya world in development: a place where agents will one day act through a body. This journal follows it as it takes shape; the Traveller study checks that body's movements.
